National Chocolate Cake Day

January 27th is National Chocolate Cake Day! Let’s celebrate with a low carb recipe for this classic dessert.

INGREDIENTS

  • 6 Eggs
  • 4 oz Unsweetened Baking Chocolate Squares
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter
  • 1 tbsp Water
  • 3/4 cup Splenda
  • 2 tbsps Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract

DIRECTIONS

  1. Heat oven to 325°F. Grease an 8-inch cake pan dust with cocoa powder
  2. Melt the chocolate, butter and water in a double boiler. Remove from heat when melted and transfer to a mixing bowl. Allow to cool and add ¼ cup of the Splenda, the cocoa powder and vanilla extract, stirring until combined. 
  3. In a separate bowl, beat eggs with electric mixer about 6 minutes. Reduce speed and gradually add remaining ½ cup of Splenda and beat until combined. Slowly add the egg mixture to the chocolate mixture and stir until combined. 
  4. Pour batter into cake pan and smooth. Bake 40-45 minutes. It’s delicious by itself, but you can also serve with unsweetened whipped cream.

We hear all the time that we need to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated for optimum health. How do you calculate the right amount of water for you? The general rule is that you should drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 75 to 150 ounces of water a day.

Dehydration lowers your blood volume, so your heart must work harder to pump the blood and through your system to get enough oxygen to your cells.

2. HYDRATION HELPS EXERCISE

Being properly hydrated helps you cool down when you heat up from exercise as well as keeping your joints lubricated.

3. HYDRATION MAKES YOUR SKIN LOOK YOUNGER

Proper hydration plumps the skin making fine lines less noticeable. When you are dehydrated the skin becomes less elastic.

4. HYDRATION CLEANSES TOXINS

To filter waste from the blood your kidneys need lots of water to excrete the toxins through your urine. Proper hydration can also help prevent urinary tract infections and kidney stones.

5. HYDRATION CAN HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS

Studies have shown that when water is consumed before a meal, people lose weight faster than those who did not drink water. Water can help you eat less by making you feel fuller. It’s not unusual to mistake thirst for hunger — so try drinking some water before grabbing a snack to make sure you’re not just thirsty.
